ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on the discussions and proceedings of a oneday conference on ‘The Evolution of the Environmental Profession in Europe: Needs, Competences and Future Trends’, convened on 30th June 1995 in Geneva, Switzerland, under the leadership of the European Environmental Management Association (EEMA) and the European Association for Environmental Management Education (EAEME). This conference brought together experts working in the environmental field at the cutting edge of new concepts with the potential to revolutionise employment in this area. Professor Philippe Bourdeau is former Director of Environmental Research in the European Commission, and now Chairman of EAEME, an association of fifteen European universities which has been operating since 1991 with the support of the European Union to offer a new European master degree in environmental management to address the emerging need for training in this area.
