ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book analyses the development of habitual routines in manufacturing teams in the Saturn car plant in the US. It argues that the effectiveness of environmental teams is greatly affected by the 'spin' an organisation places on its environmental policies in internal communications. The book reviews the formation and maintenance of teams in voluntary, non-profit organisations, asking questions about leadership, motivation and team performance. It analyses developments in the US and the leaming processes that support teamworking, innovation and change. The book looks at the important issue of internal change management, which has serious implications for environmental management and the team-based approach. It examines the barriers that confront the environmental, health and safety team in the conduct of their strategic and operational activities. The book discusses the development of teams in the education sector and how to combat inhibiting effects of current structures.
