ABSTRACT

This chapter helps to alleviate the state of affairs by clarifying the connections that link the environmental record of the organisation to the management of its human resources. It is concerned with the decisions that managers face in both situations. The chapter includes decisions on matters such as the distribution of authority and responsibilities, the organisation of work, the choice of management styles, the level of formalisation, training and development matters and the motivating and disciplining of staff-in other words, decisions regarding the organisation and management of people. It aims and aspirations of the scientific and technical strategy and those of the managerial strategy. Although the overall objective of the managerial strategy is clear, the practical steps needed to bring the strategy to fruition are the subject of much debate and conjecture. The chapter concludes that participatory forms of management and organisation are precursors to a successful environmental performance.
