ABSTRACT

Environmental management training has been found to be an area of deficiency in commercial training provision. Levels of commitment throughout the organisation are necessary to implement fully an environmental management system. An effective internal communication procedure is necessary for the implementation of an environmental management system. The International Organisation for Standardisation 14001 requirement places a greater emphasis on the staff training need than British Standards 7750 previously did, although the required areas of awareness demonstrate a remarkable similarity. The evaluation of training and relating it to environmental performance is of key importance. In addition to general awareness training, procedural and specific training will also be required for specialist activities in the process of EMS implementation and monitoring. In the main, training provision at the assessment/specialist level for the setting of training and performance standards in the auditing of environmental management systems is currently left to the competing professional bodies, operating under market-forces pressure.
