ABSTRACT

The procurement of goods and services is a daily occurrence for most businesses. Development of internal procurement practices within the Regional Corporation proved to be invaluable in understanding the barriers that green procurement initiatives face. Regional purchasers faced many of the same problems as their private-sector counterparts in trying to adopt green procurement practices. Behavioural change strategies fall into three basic categories or variations thereof. Normative strategies, those that motivate change by drawing on the strength of intrinsic beliefs and values of the target audience are generally found to be the most sustainable. Coercive strategies, those that rely on force and utilitarian strategies, which rely on direct rewards, tend only to be effective so long as they are enforced. Equally important to the success of behavioural change initiatives is the need to recognise that individuals evaluate information in part on the basis of the credibility of the information source.
