European businesses recognise that the environment is a major pressure on future business development. During 1993, a study by the Centre for Exploitation of Science and Technology (CEST) and the Association for the Conservation of Energy (ACE) for the Energy and Environment Programme (Royal Institute for International Affairs) sought to shed light on current thinking in Europe's boardrooms. To develop such a broad perspective and a broad-based understanding of trends, a survey must cover many companies and a number of sectors. Nearly sixty company board-level directors responsible for the environment were interviewed across six countries: Germany, France, Italy, UK, Belgium and The Netherlands, in five sectors: chemicals, automotive, steel production, metal processing and power generation. Both the automotive and steel companies expect a continuing emphasis on meeting environmental pressures through waste reduction, treatment and pollution abatement.
