ABSTRACT

This chapter examines specifics of environmental technology as a rapid-growth business and discusses market trends from the European perspective. Internationalisation of the environmental business is examined with reference to small firms in Finland. Due to the limited domestic market, internationalisation at an early stage is essential for small enterprises. Environmental technology is a major tool for decreasing the environmental burden. A heterogeneous industry, it includes businesses ranging from research and measurement services to materials-management systems, such as comprehensive municipal waste management systems, including treatment facilities. Environmental markets are initially driven by legislation and public administration responsible for implementation and control. Typical environmental products are perceived as investment goods in process industries. Customers expect supply of an entire system involving individually-tailored solutions and flexible technical service. The chapter concludes by presenting a strategic scheme for formation of an international partnership.
