ABSTRACT

In order to generate public discussion and identify interested individuals and potential community partnerships for addressing the modular classroom issue, the Portland State University School of Architecture teamed with the American Institute of Architects, Portland, in 2010 to hold a national symposium. As a result, what people see in most schools across the nation are uninspiring and unhealthy classrooms. The efforts have resulted in the placement of approximately 50 SAGE classrooms serving 1,400 students to date in school districts across Oregon and Washington in a relatively short amount of time. The presence of an institute in a university environment is critical to establishing a support network throughout the institution that can benefit from the expertise and resource sharing that makes multi-partner processes like the SAGE classroom project possible. While the industry partners were critical to this project's success, equally critical were the numerous other partners that stepped in to provide a wide range of expertise.
