ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Jordan. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Jordan. The Jordanian economy has been volatile since the global financial crisis and ensuing global recession, which was quickly followed by the Arab Spring uprisings that started at the beginning of 2011. A study by UKAID shows that the Jordanian private sector has been active in supporting humanitarian-related action, especially in light of the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis. In addition to its commitment to open borders, the Jordanian government decided early on to allow Syrian refugees access to public services. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Watch Jordan, an online stakeholder-driven platform, is planning to publish a study documenting the sustainability journey in Jordan. It is also planning to publish comparative sectoral studies on corporate responsibility, covering sectors such as banking, manufacturing and healthcare.
