ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Madagascar. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Madagascar. Research on sustainable enterprises in Madagascar is limited. GIZ (the German funding agency) has encouraged public–private partnerships in Madagascar through developing small and medium-sized sustainable agricultural businesses in collaboration with Rio Tinto's mining operations. Since the 2009 political crisis, Madagascar has not had a clear development strategy and action plan. However, in 2013 an interim strategy document was proposed by UNDP, largely based on the Madagascar Action Plan (MAP), and it is likely that any forthcoming adopted strategy will be similar. The key aspects of the MAP are commitments to responsible governance with a high growth economy. It also addresses sustainable development and the protection of natural resources through environmental mainstreaming across all sectors with policy development standards and codes.
