ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Namibia. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Namibia. Sustainable development in Namibia has been hampered by the inadequate capacity of both the public and private sectors. The country faces a general skills shortage in the vocational and business spheres. In the case of small businesses, access to funding, poor management skills, absence of skilled employees and lack of work-space are often cited as major challenges. According to Namibia's Fourth National Development Plan (NDP4), the Government's priority issues are high and sustained economic growth, increased income equality and employment creation. Even though there are still many questions about an appropriate sustainable development model for Namibia, the country generally aspires to be a world-class innovation-driven economy.
