ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Oman. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Oman. Oman has a market style economy that is primarily dependent on oil and gas production. Oman's government policy is to create a national economy based on private enterprise in a competitive environment devoid of monopolistic practices. The stage has been reached where the basic physical infrastructure of the country is in place. In order to further the socioeconomic development of Oman, it is essential to build up a strong, efficient and competitive private sector. Government incentives are required, and some financial assistance where necessary, in order to stimulate rapid growth, particularly in areas of production and commerce. The Omani private sector contributes, alongside the government, to achieving comprehensive development, mainly through charitable donations.
