ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Senegal. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Senegal. Senegal is one of the less developed countries of the world and a significant part of its population is below the poverty threshold. From a sustainable development perspective, Senegalese environmental policy focuses on the rational management of natural resources, focusing especially on biodiversity and conservation programmes (restoration, reforestation and protection of forest resources, wildlife and habitats). Senegal's economy lacks diversification and has an unhealthy dependence on exogenous factors (world price fluctuations, foreign capital inflows, floods, droughts, etc.). There is a general lack of research on sustainable enterprise in Senegal. Senegal has developed several environmentally oriented policy guidelines, translated into different laws. In addition to these national policy initiatives, NGOs are most active in promoting socially responsible management practices.
