ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in South Sudan. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in South Sudan. After over 50 years of civil war, the Republic of South Sudan became the world's newest country in 2011 through a referendum that saw an overwhelming majority of southern Sudanese vote in favour of secession from the northern Republic of The Sudan. Unfortunately, despite the end of the civil war, internal conflict and tension was again sparked in late 2013 within the ranks of the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) army, resulting in widespread ethnic violence across the country that continues at the time of writing. While there are monumental challenges on the path towards sustainable development in South Sudan, there are also unique and promising opportunities for sustainable enterprises to address development needs and livelihood strategies.
