ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Tanzania. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Tanzania. Tanzania has policies that show its support for the global sustainable development agenda, at least in principle. The government has developed a set of nine goals, referred to as the Tanzania Millennium Development Goals, and a national vision that emphasizes a transition from being a least developed country to a middle-income country, with a focus on human development. The vision is supported by Tanzania's National Strategy of Growth and Reduction of Poverty (MKUKUTA in Kiswahili). The development of sustainable enterprises needs a complete change in mind-set, which in turn requires strong political will and multi-stakeholder partnerships. There are no specific measures to promote sustainable enterprises in the country.
