ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the national approaches to sustainable enterprise in Angola. It includes key information about the priority issues, trends, and government policies as well as best-practice case studies of sustainable enterprise in Angola. Angola faces a range of problems, most notably infrastructure development, mining and oil dependence, healthcare and human resources. Despite substantial and varied natural resources, Angola remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Social enterprise is often equated with philanthropy, sponsorship and education driven activities in Angola. There is evidence to suggest that social enterprise has emerged recently as being important for the oil industry and mining in Angola. The public and the country's political leaders clearly expect oil companies to contribute to society. A partnership has been created between the Government of Angola (GoA), the country's private sector and civil society to provide technical assistance in strengthening the corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda in the oil sector.
