ABSTRACT

The Philippines is located in South-East Asia and is a large archipelago made up of over 7,000 islands, with an area of 300,000 km2 which is categorized into three island groups: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Economic growth in the Philippines lagged behind its South-East Asian neighbours. Generika Drugstore is a chain of pharmacies all across the Philippines, which provides low-cost medicine and diagnostic health education and services to the low-income population. The Farmer Entrepreneurship Program links smallholder farmers to the Jollibee supply chain through the provision of red bulb onions, thus resulting in increased incomes and livelihoods. Kennemer Foods International Inc expanded its business model to include local production by setting up a contract-growing programme in rural areas and extending company-owned nurseries. The Department of Health reported a 300" reduction in water-borne diseases from 1997 to 2007 and it estimated that since inception, the business model has generated over $0.5 million of income from new jobs.
