ABSTRACT

This chapter provides key information on the national context, priority issues, trends, government policies, and case studies of sustainable enterprise in Hungary. Hungary is situated in the Carpathian Basin, in central Europe bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. Hungary is a parliamentary democracy and has been member of the European Union since May 2004. The International Corporate Sustainability Barometer describes Hungary's performance as follows: The Hungarian values for stakeholder demands are above average for several environmental issues. However, in Hungary consumers/end-users are the stakeholders who promote corporate sustainability the least. Sustainability management tools are broadly known and applied in the country. Sustainability management tools are broadly known and applied in the country. However, Hungarian companies are more sceptical towards the benefits of the implementation of corporate sustainability. Awareness about sustainability in Hungary is relatively high among companies, government and society.
