ABSTRACT

The devolution of legislative and administrative responsibilities has reinforced the disparities among the 20 administrative regions. Annual growth in Italy between 2000 and 2007 was the lowest in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. Italy's environmental performance is fragmented geographically and is shaped by broader economic and institutional challenges. Italians are among the least satisfied in European Union with the environmental quality of their country. Italy is a medium to high water-stressed country, with irrigation accounting for about 44% of total water withdrawal. The Italian government promotes sustainable development policies, with a predominant concern for environmental aspects. Italian enterprises are subject to different environmental laws according to the specific sector, geographical area and the products or services they provide. The most important organization representing the manufacturing and services companies in Italy. Its Charter of Principles and Practical Guide provide a milestone for its member companies in their path towards sustainable development.
