ABSTRACT

The Republic of Macedonia is located in the south of the Balkan Peninsula, with Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo and Albania as its neighbours. The Republic of Macedonia adopted a national sustainable development strategy in 2010 with an action plan and regular focus on the issue by the government in the past four years, including a growing focus on sustainable tourism. In the field of environment, the main challenges lie in the field of waste treatment. While the quantity of generated waste of 384 kg per capita in 2013 is only 10% higher than the one in Slovenia, there are practically no waste processing plants.
