ABSTRACT

Romania is the 12th largest state in Europe by size and the ninth largest European country in terms of population, with 21 million inhabitants. Romania has a high number of people, over 3 million, living outside its borders. The context of sustainability in Romania is shaped by two major influences: it being a former communist country and a current member of the European Union (EU). Romania's communist heritage helps explain the paternalistic view enterprises still have about environmental protection, business's contribution to society and industry's ethical behaviour. Romania has to consolidate the economic growth registered in 2013 and 2014 and to improve the absorption of the EU funds to increase the social cohesion and to reduce regional disparities. In Romania, most companies struggle for financial viability. Some are engaged in corporate social responsibility (CSR) actions, oriented towards their employees, clients or other immediate stakeholders.
