ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Mexico profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. In 2009, Mexico implemented programmes for sustainable public transportation and replacement of old electronic appliances and light bulbs. The national climate change information system and the creation of a carbon market will also create incentives and impacts, especially in the transportation, agriculture and power sectors. The government calls these policies "Fomento Ambiental", which is a general programme for environmental responsibility in several industrial and service sectors. Environmental degradation also has a great impact, with some of the most costly effects related to air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and hurricanes. Investment in sectors that create these kinds of job does not necessarily translate into a race to the bottom. Foreign investment can help the country enhance both the quality of jobs and environmental performance.
