ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Canada profile that includes sustainable enterprise in context; priority issues, trends, government policies and case studies. Canada is well known around the world for its natural resources, including its forests, vast wilderness, water supply and energy resources. In Canada, a social enterprise refers to both businesses that focus on providing solely social benefits to communities as well as those working to benefit society and the environment. A 2013 joint study by The Canadian Community Economic Development Network, Simon Fraser University, and Mount Royal University concluded that in Ontario there were 1,040 confirmed social enterprises, while a 2012 study confirmed 266 social enterprises in Manitoba. The Office of the Extractive Sector corporate social responsibility Counsellor, established as part of the Government of Canada's Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy for the Canadian International Extractive Sector, acts in an advisory and guidance role for Canadian extractive companies operating outside the country and project-affected communities.
