ABSTRACT

This chapter argues for raising awareness of social equality and meritocracy as core elements of social justice. It defines social justice as the moral obligation to work towards equal opportunities for all individuals. Income and social inequality in every country and culture is historical and richly studied in the disciplines of sociology, psychology and anthropology. Organizational diversity and social class intersect in so far as class is a concept that describes the stratification of people within an economic system. The chapter identifies three key issues related to social class and management: hiring, training and development, and managing employees. Addressing what is social class and what we know about the impacts of social class and how it relates to other organizational concepts such as diversity is a sound beginning to enhancing student knowledge of social class. Social class impacts people feelings of inclusion and place in society and in an organization's hierarchy.
