ABSTRACT

The world is a complex place. No longer does a company survive and remain profitable based on a stream of customers from the local area. In a world of globalized shopping, supply and demand, there are many inputs into developing a supply chain (SC) that is not only adequate, but effective and resilient. The concept of the triple bottom line (TBL) was developed to leverage the environment, economy and impact on society into the SC. In order for a SC to be resilient, or able to withstand the stress of change, it must be able to anticipate and adapt to risk. A sustainable chain will be able to maintain and persist. The people, the place and the price all factor into the development of a resilient and sustainable SC. The combination of these factors can be used to develop a SC that is resilient and responsive and can lead a company to sustainability, as long as the company understands that the SC is part of the overall system that provides products and services to the customers or clients.
