ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates how both governments and businesses in Asia and the Pacific can enhance sustainability within global supply chains (GSCs), in particular through the development and promotion of sustainability (or CSR) reporting. Presently sustainability reporting, whilst gaining popularity among the global business community, has not been fully integrated into GSCs where small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an important role. This chapter specifically examines how sustainability reporting can contribute to enhance the transparency of GSCs whose governance structure is typically complicated with a large variety of players and which are inherently less transparent. For these purposes, 121 sustainability reporting initiatives at both global and regional levels are examined to develop and propose a sustainable GSC reporting framework in Asia and the Pacific. Before concluding, recommendations are provided for enabling regulatory and policy frameworks in order to implement sustainability reporting within GSCs in cooperation with businesses.
