ABSTRACT

This study focuses on how a female general counsel can impact the legal market and beyond in pursing diversity, gender equality and leadership development. The subject of study is Pfizer Inc. (Pfizer) General Counsel Amy Schulman and her legal department at the American Fortune 100 pharmaceutical firm. Pfizer, and Amy Schulman in particular, were selected for several reasons. These include Pfizer’s well-documented record and recognition in the areas of gender equality and diversity, accessibility, and comprehensive institutional structure, and Amy Schulman’s track record and personal commitment to actively pursuing diversity. This chapter examines some of the specific actions guided by the leadership of Amy Schulman at Pfizer that have influenced gender equality and women’s leadership development within and outside the organization. These findings bring insights into 36how (female) general counsels can help in closing the gender gap and in developing the leaders of tomorrow. The case study and its findings offer valuable lessons that provide insights well beyond Pfizer, delivering practical contributions and implications for pursing diversity in the legal profession.
