ABSTRACT
Singita Grumeti is private game reserve integral to the Serengeti National Park ecosystem. The luxury of the lodges and the symbiotic relationship between tourism, conservation and community development make the property unique. One Planet Living, created by BioRegional, demonstrates a world where everyone can enjoy a high quality of life within the productive capacity of the planet. Singita Grumeti used the ten sustainability principles, with targets linked to the environmental limits of the planet, to form an adaptive management plan. Implementation started with staff training, monitoring and energy efficiency upgrades. Successes include: putting the carbon footprint on a downward trajectory; 10% reduction in water consumption; and widespread staff engagement. The One Planet framework has provided clear understandable visions and targets, which can be easily communicated to staff and guests. By embracing One Planet Living, Singita Grumeti is setting a new standard, creating a positive future for local people, wildlife and guests.
