ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the contradicts a common myth often heard, but never proven, that cc in developing countries, particularly in Latin America, comes through multinational foreign companies operating in the region. Corporate citizenship and corporate social responsibility have become hot topics of debate for business, academia and organised civil society in Latin America. However, large sectors of the Latin American economy have lagged in the past two decades, aggravating many environmental and social problems such as deforestation, unemployment, income inequality and crime. The press is fundamental to changing business, governments and society. It could catalyse cc by spreading critical information and transform society by demanding more accountability from businesses and governments. The reason is that there are ‘hidden’ structural problems in the political economy of the banana industry, which has gendered feayures.
