ABSTRACT

Since its first appearance in January 1907, Chemical Abstracts, published by the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) division of the American Chemical Society, has endeavored to abstract and index all of the world’s published literature of chemistry. The definition of what constitutes the literature of chemistry has broadened somewhat over the years. Initially, coverage focused primarily on the research literature. Coverage of the industrial applications of chemical science and technology, particularly coverage of patents, was expanded in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Patent coverage was further expanded to additional countries of issue and additional kinds of patent documents in the 1960s and 1970s.
