ABSTRACT

The evergrowing participation of Jews in politics, in the arts and sciences, in commerce and industry, has long been accompanied by an ever-increasing communal self-analysis and personal introspection. For many generations, Spanish and Portuguese Jewish community was the dominant section of Anglo-Jewry in terms of numbers, wealth and influence. The leaders of the Institute for Jewish Policy Research constitute a core of initiative, authority, and leadership in the Jewish community of considerable and growing weight. The Chief Rabbi's transfer of his authority to laymen in the matter of the financial resources of Jewish Continuity, may be seen as in line with that characteristic of Anglo-Jewry. The Chief Rabbinate is an office of the highest prestige outside the Jewish community as well as exercising a unique degree of authority within. The rabbinate under its jurisdiction has in general been viewed as partaking of what is variously termed mainstream, centrist, or modern Orthodoxy.
