ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the dark side of the massive mortality of children, but of course there are many individuals and organizations, governmental and nongovernmental, that do wonderful things for children. International responsibility for massive children's mortality can also take other forms. With the increasing vulnerability of children in warfare, warring parties need to give more attention to the welfare of children in armed conflict situations. Some children are killed directly in combat, and many more die as a result of the disruption of food, health, sanitation, and other systems. A number of organizations, private and public, national and international, have emerged to take up the advocacy of children, United Nations Children's Fund, Defense for Children International, and Save the Children. Weaving together the scattered threads of international statements of the rights of children, the convention's articles cover civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.
