Its author happily combines a thorough knowledge of the scientific—and journalistic—literature with a lively imagination, conceptual clarity, and a sense of humor: he finds mobile commuters horrifying the old residents of a three-hundred-year-old village with their demands for such educational frills as “plastic gymnasiums and marble swimming pools.”
