ABSTRACT

The health hucksters prey on the elderly, on persons afflicted with diseases like arthritis, cancer, on the poor who can be taken in by offers of "free" diagnoses or trial treatments, on faddists, bust developers, potions alleged to increase sexual powers, complexion aids. Roy Wright DeWelles concentrated on cancer patients and treated hundreds of them—at $1,000 each—with his machine and injections of unproved and unorthodox drugs. The tragedy is that a belief in them keeps so many despairing cancer victims from getting the early and proper treatment they must have to survive. The lay public is unusually—and understandably—prone to try unproved cancer remedies no matter how foolish. The pain of arthritis can be alleviated by proper treatment, but no cure is yet possible and very often pain returns from time to time even with good medical care.
