ABSTRACT
A technology is moving from industry to the home with the potential to change the way we live at a very fundamental level. Today e-commerce is a major sector of the economy, telework is a serious alternative for millions of workers, online gaming is a major industry. Critics of technological progress often point to military technology to support their claim that technological progress outstrips social progress, and indeed it is now possible to kill huge numbers of people at one blow. The newest disruptive technology is 3D printing, also known as rapid prototyping and instant manufacturing. Many people are already enchanted by the prospect of being able to have their own 3D printer, but the price has to come down before large numbers of people buy into the technology. The chapter remains willing to trust politicians to look after our interests, insurance companies to pay claims, and banks keep money safe and pay interest.
