ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the changing potential of tourism in Johannesburg inner city. It argues that the inner city of Johannesburg, albeit potentially a "difficult area" for tourism development, does have a number of positive assets that can be harnessed to provide the basis for the revival of tourism activity, more especially as part of wider sets of ongoing initiatives for economic and physical regeneration. The chapter discusses the international record of promoting tourism in inner cities, in particular linked to wider objectives and programs of economic regeneration, and is surveyed. For many cities, the focus within urban tourism promotion has been to capitalize upon their potential for business travel and tourism. At one level, the promotion of tourism as part of the regeneration of in inner city Johannesburg must be part of wider strategic planning for the growth of tourism in Johannesburg as a whole.
