ABSTRACT
This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters in the second part of this book. The part of the book is concerned with the way the action of the individual is organized into a personality system. It attempts to organize certain motivational variables with those of the theory of action so as to form the two into one coherent system. The part begins with the systematic analysis of value patterns themselves and their organization into systems. It places them in the context of larger culture systems and analyzes their articulation with social systems and personalities. The part also begins with the social system, analyzing its bases of organization and its functional problems. It shows how value-orientation patterns enter into the institutionalization of roles and of the allocative and integrative structures of the social system and how the motivation of individual actors is channeled into role behavior.
