ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the fascinating question of how the remarkable individual gets involved in community affairs, how he makes his will felt, how he operates, and what satisfactions he gets from his activities. Bill Long is an activist. The multiple activities of Bill Long provide an example par excellence of the pyramiding of resources. Long first used his energy to build up the Co-op. His solid position there was used to gain contacts, information and popularity. Long evidences a high degree of civic obligation which is probably deeply internalized. Long has an extremely high sense of political efficacy. He votes in all elections, talks incessantly about public affairs, writes to public officials, expresses opinions frequently, is a Democratic precinct committeeman, contributes to campaigns, asks others for political support, and is approached to give his in turn.
