      ABSTRACT

The ideological revolution novelty lies principally in two broad areas: in the very idea of a revolution within socialism, and in the character of the socialist society envisaged as the result of that revolution. Soviet writers argue that the second socialist revolution has distinctive features that make it consistent with Marxism-Leninism. Four features in the Soviet discussions are: first, it is not a revolution that destroys the fundamentally socialist character of the society, second, the revolution is not aimed at overthrowing the existing political order, third, it is not a violent revolution or one directed against a clearly identified class enemy, and Fourth, it is not a revolution occurring all at once, but it is a protracted process, carried out over an indefinitely long period of time. The increased attention to human motives other than class interests may be seen in many current developments in Soviet thought.
