ABSTRACT

The White House staff grew, the Science Adviser’s staff grew, the National Security Council became operative, the Domestic Council was created, and the Bureau of the Budget became the Office of Management and Budget. Outside the White House in Washington new cabinet departments came into being—Energy, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation; independent agencies—National Air and Space Administration, Environmental Pollution Agency, Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. Quite apart from space, it is worthwhile to enumerate some of the chores that the President’s Science Advisory Committee performed in the "Golden Age". The Science Adviser was very instrumental with the President and then Bureau of the Budget in bringing about an increase in the budget of the National Science Foundation. The President’s Science Advisory Committee was concerned with the structure in the Cabinet departments in regard to science and technology, and it re-activated the concept that each department with large commitments to science and technology have a special assistant secretary for those areas.
