ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two simple propositions: first, people living at the margin of subsistence are likely to work very hard, not because they consider hard work a virtue but because they find it a necessity; second, most people increases their income to enjoy a higher level of consumption, including more leisure. It identifies and assesses the changes that are occurring in the work environment within which tomorrow's executives will carry out their multiple responsibilities. In addition to adjusting to the large-scale increases in the number and proportion of career-oriented women, tomorrow's executives will face challenges from minorities, both native born and immigrants. The chapter summarizes the executives as follows: Within an increasingly dynamic and competitive environment, they must develop a whole new set of human resources strategies to attract and retain persons with talent and drive who are committed to new values and lifestyles.
