ABSTRACT

The Brookline Early Education Project (BEEP) began in November 1972 as a research and demonstration project delivering services to families with preschool children. The project was planned in collaboration with local school personnel, community representatives, and professionals from the fields of education, health care, evaluation methodology and social policy. The project's main goals were to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a wide variety of possible services and to make this information available to program planners throughout the country. The major approach in this part of the project was to increase parents' knowledge and confidence by providing information on normal child development and by counseling about effective child management. The aim was to help parents take responsibility for their own behavior and decisions. One of the goals of the intensive schedule of diagnostic testing was to identify the most important or optimal times for a program such as BEEP to assess the health and developmental status of young children.
