ABSTRACT

The diplomacy of the Ballhausplatz was for a long time the monopoly of the government and the officials of the Foreign Ministry. Only in January 1999 did the safeguarding, storage, and use of the archival materials of the federal government come to be governed by law, which also regulated access to the archives. Among the most important non-national and private archives that are accessible in Austria may be counted the Vereinfur Geschichte der Arbeiterbewegung, the Institutfur Zeitgeschichte der Universitat Wien , the Stiftung Bruno Kreisky Archiv, and the Karl-von-Vogelsang-Institut, all of which are located in Vienna. Some of the official public sources are the Jahrbuch der osterreichischen Aubenpolitik, published yearly since 1979. While there is a lack of scholarly works and editions of files on Austrian foreign policy after 1945, there are a number of memoirs from the pens of former foreign policy figures and diplomats; unfortunately, diaries, which are much more authentic, are to be found only occasionally.
