ABSTRACT

We grannies live in contradictory times: in the sad laddish world of the television comedian it’s business as usual as far as ageism and misogyny are concerned; meanwhile politicians have woken up to the usefulness of grandparents in child-care but the government has raised the retirement age, and advertisers are tom between employing granny stereotypes, from the easily-shocked octagenarian (as if grannies haven’t a lifetime’s experience) to the roller-blading harridan, and courting the ’grey pound’.
