ABSTRACT

There is no doubt, that Karl Farkas lost his life insurance as a result of persecution by the “Third Reich”. Even the money, which was paid to his wife, was lost due to his forced emigration and the interruption of his professional career. An insurance policy is based on the insurance contract law and supervised by state authority. With the last payment, the insurance contract was deemed expired. Up to at least 80% of the Jewish life insurance policies were repurchased by the policyholders themselves. The Reich confiscated the rest either individually or by Regulation Number Eleven of 11 November 1941. But for the Jewish population, this made no significant difference. In 1938 there were about 1.2 Million life insurance policies in Austria. As these policies were not marked by racial criteria, it was quite complicated to find a specific Jewish policy. The Jewish customer could stop premium payments and hope that its policy would not be found.
