ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the major components of three models of linked psychosocial care for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive youths and youths at high risk for HIV infection. They are YouthCare in Seattle, the Teen Outreach and Primary Services (TOPS) Program in Bridgeport, and Boston HIV Adolescent Provider and Peer Education Network for Services (HAPPENS) in Boston. The chapter provides practical information on how three diverse sites, in three different cities, created effective programs that serve youths with HIV and those at risk for HIV infection. All three programs gained from the knowledge and experience of other programs for HIV-positive and homeless youths. While YouthCare serves more street-involved and homeless youths than the other projects, all three projects serve youths who are marginalized from traditional resources. The Boston HAPPENS Program provides high quality, accessible, youth-oriented, culturally sensitive care for HIV-positive, homeless, and at-risk youths. At TOPS, a range of HIV health care services and prevention activities was established by the agency.
