ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how an organization with a broad mandate, the National Business Initiative (NBI) , is working to assist development in South Africa. It focuses on the principles the NBI uses to achieve effective partnerships with government, business, and other NGOs. The NBI was formed in 1995 as a not-for-profit, public interest, business-based organization dedicated to helping "make the new South Africa work." The National Business Initiative is funded by its 185 member companies and through cost recovery for its projects. Its core budget for 2001 was 24 million rand. In addition, it manages projects worth more than 70 million rand. The staff complement of the NBI is sevety-eight. NBI's programs are business-driven and seek to instill business principles, such as efficiency, effectiveness, and entrepreneurship, within the development community. To achieve its goals, the National Business Initiative must use partnerships.
