ABSTRACT

According to Will Durant in The Story of Civilization: Our Oriental Heritage, it was common belief among the descendants of Moses that boys were produced by the right testicle and girls by the left, since the latter was smaller and weaker. In his 1994 Obstetrics and Gynecology, Harold Speert states that Hippocrates and Galen also believed that 'male infants were a product of the right ovary; females, of the left'. As attributed to Michael Scott, from the book Secrets of Nature Revealed, for sale in 1754: the male child is conceived on the right side of the womb, and the female on the left. The dichotomy between right and left as a reflex of the dichotomy between the positive and negative sides of the Universe is a concept as old as our culture. If authors repeated and paraphrased themselves freely and abundantly on the matter of the left testicle, they were even more emphatic in demonizing the menstrual blood.
