ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the various groups that fall under the umbrella of diversity. It discusses the scope of diversity content available for effective transcultural social work practice. Diversity content in social work education encompasses groups of people who experience the effects of social and economic injustice, including all forms of discrimination. The social work commitment to a diversity framework reflects an appreciation and understanding of the consequences of diversity in ethnic background, gender, class, sexual orientation, and culture in a multicultural society. Content on human diversity is not a single component; rather, diversity content is multidimensional, addressing numerous communities and groups and encompassing multiple sources for effective practice. The societal forces, combined with accompanying political factors such as increased participation of minorities in the political process, have profoundly affected social work education. Social work practice with minority clients addresses individuals, families, and members of communities who historically have been oppressed or have had limited power in United States society.
