ABSTRACT

The family and youth problems are created not on the basis of one person but as a product of the interaction of all family members acting as a unit. Adolescent maltreatment exemplifies the heterogeneity of abuse as a phenomenon. This chapter illustrates recent advances in conceptual work and in methodology that may be utilized to bring about a clearer understanding of adolescent abuse. It provides a systems framework for understanding family functioning, and explores the family from a developmental perspective. Ongoing abuse is marked by deficits in parenting skills and problem behavior of the child. The family is very chaotic, seemingly overwhelmed with the problems of daily living. Quality change is abuse that has intensified due to the child. The provision of adequate housing for the family is a prerequisite for the family. The physical condition of the home reflects a commitment by family members to the welfare of the family unit.
